After Pokemon Sword and Shield set the standard for post-launch DLC in mainline Pokemon games, Pokemon Legends: Z-A has come out swinging by announcing upcoming content before the base game has even released. This has been met with some controversial opinions from fans, but many future players are excited because the trailer for the DLC, Mega Dimension, showcases tons of never-before-seen Mega Stones. It’s not known yet how many Mega Evolutions will be added to the post-game content, and that’s left fans to speculate widely about what each stone might mean.
So far, the only stones that have their Megas revealed, if all the stones reference new evolutions, are Raichu X and Y. Even against the controversy the DLC has kicked up, there’s plenty of hope that players will get to see some of their favorite Pokemon Mega Evolve in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, even if it’s in post-game content. Thanks to one particular stone that can be found in the trailer, plenty of fans are hoping that Mega Flygon will finally appear after being skipped when Mega Evolution was first introduced. Unfortunately, this likely isn’t the case.
It’s common for fans to look at the colors of Mega Evolution stones and make a guess of what creature they’re made to represent, but one key detail gets missed in the excitement at times. Mega Stones typically showcase the colors of the Mega Evolution, rather than their base forms. This is highlighted in the Mega Dimension trailer itself with Mega Raichu X and Mega Raichu Y. Not only that, but Game Freak also tried to make Mega Flygon for Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire back in Generation 6, and scrapped the idea. The current hype around Mega Flygon is a perfect illustration of why.
How Mega Flygon Might Put Game Freak in a Pickle That Isn't Even Worth the Effort
When Pokemon X and Y introduced the Mega Evolution mechanic, the introduction of Mega Salamence quickly made fans speculate and request a similar form for the Dragon Pokemon’s counterpart, Flygon. Because of this, Game Freak did consider the idea and came up with a few concepts. As fans already know, though, the form didn’t come to pass, and it’s purely due to fan expectations. Ken Sugimori himself has said that Flygon fit the Mega Evolution criteria, but no design was completed that felt like it would satisfy the sheer number of people desiring Mega Flygon even back then.
Now, the odds are likely even smaller for Mega Flygon than they were back in 2014. As part of the Game Freak Teraleak that happened roughly a year ago, it was revealed that at least a Flying-type Eevee evolution was scrapped for Pokemon Sun and Moon on the basis of being too similar to fan-made concepts. As upsetting as this information might be, it makes sense as Nintendo, Game Freak, or The Pokemon Company could find themselves in hot water if they design something too similar to a fan’s work; it’d be hard to prove the similarities weren’t on purpose, and the fan could sue for it.
Fans Should Leave Mega Flygon As an Unexpected Surprise Rather Than a Hyped-Up Hope
The hype behind Mega Flygon may indeed be the nail in the coffin that keeps it from happening. This expectation and desire have only grown since the last time Mega Evolution was featured prominently in the mainline games, and even now, the Mega Stone shown off in the Mega Dimension trailer has fueled the fire and led to more pleas and fan art around the concept. Of course, fans should always draw and create whatever they want, but the growth of this expectation might still leave the concept shelved to this day.
As a result, Pokemon Legends: Z-A players shouldn’t expect to see Flygon anytime soon, as that Mega Stone could belong to almost any Pokemon at this stage. There’s a lot stacked against Flygon in particular, so if it does show up, it’ll be a big surprise as it’s made it through against every single one of the odds. However, Mega Flygon remains a very loaded “if” rather than a guaranteed “when.”
