According to The Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst, Manchester United “want to make at least three more signings in time for the start of next season”.
What’s the word?
The Red Devils made just three permanent signings last summer, when they brought in Daniel James, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire. The Manchester side also saw some notable exits, including the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez and Ander Herrera.
Having sealed a £47m deal for Bruno Fernandes in the final week of the January transfer window, it appears United are intent on splashing the cash this summer. According to Luckhurst, the club have “budgeted for between three and five additions this calendar year”.

It’s further claimed they are expected to make at least three signings, with a midfielder, forward and striker being prioritised – the likes of James Maddison, Jack Grealish, Donny van de Beek and Jadon Sancho are all on the radar.
Much-needed
Clinching the signing of Fernandes – who was reported to have been of interest to them even last summer – should be seen as just the start for United. The Red Devils currently find themselves outside of the top four, and are 38 points behind runaway leaders Liverpool.
If they are to even think about closing that gap, then there surely has to be more permanent arrivals than there were last summer. United’s failure to sign a replacement for Lukaku played a big role in them scrambling around on deadline day trying to sign a striker on loan – in the end, they managed to bring in Odion Ighalo.

If Luckhurst’s report is accurate and United pull off at least three signings, then Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will feel more confident about bridging the gap to the top. It will become more of his own team than something his predecessors have built, and he will have no excuses whatsoever.
Meanwhile, Scott McTominay has delivered a glowing verdict on this teammate.
