Rumors are flying all over the shop when it comes to the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine, a video game take on the famed X-Men character with Insomniac at the helm. However, one rumor in particular (if true) would see Marvel’s Wolverine throw quite the bone to Magic: The Gathering.
Insomniac’s Marvel’s Wolverine game has been subject to a great deal of hype and speculation, and it’s easy to see why. With Insomniac delivering a series of highly acclaimed Spider-Man titles for Sony, Marvel fans are waiting with bated breath to see where the company is taking the superhero genre next. The studio has been tight-lipped about its efforts with Wolverine, but that hasn’t stopped leaks from pushing info to the forefront. Following the 2023 ransomware attack on Insomniac, more leaks and insider claims continue to trickle out about the much-anticipated title, and now its release window may be clear.
If Rumors Are True, Marvel's Wolverine Could Be A Boon To Magic The Gathering's Crossover Plans
A flurry of new Marvel‘s Wolverine rumors have come out recently, many of which are pointing in the same few directions. Not only are there rumors claiming that Wolverine will release in 2026 (according to an anonymous source speaking to MP1st), but there are similar rumors claiming that a Sony State of Play showcase will be happening soon, where Wolverine might get a spotlight. Of course, all rumors should be taken with a grain of salt, but a 2026 release date isn’t beyond the realm of possibility.
How Magic: The Gathering's Own 2026 Plans Could Coincide
While Marvel already has a busy year set for 2026—with Avengers: Doomsday and Spider-Man: Brand New Day already on the docket—Wolverine would by no means be lost in the shuffle, given the hype surrounding the character and Insomniac’s previous Spider-Man projects. Considering this, Magic: The Gathering‘s 2026 sets could snatch an opportunity.
Marvel and Magic are having an increasingly successful relationship, a byproduct of Wizards of the Coast’s recent pursuit of more and more crossovers, and this will continue into 2026 with another Universes Beyond set. Furthermore, though this has yet to be revealed, head designer on Magic: The Gathering, Mark Rosewater, has expressed that Wizards wanted to reprint the Marvel cards from last year’s Secret Lair drop in 2025, but that the company has settled on merging these reprints with an upcoming 2026 set.
When it comes to those Marvel Secret Lair cards, Wolverine had his own dedicated drop. Not only did he get a dedicated card, but his drop brought 4 related cards along in tandem, all themed around the character. Combining the possibility of this drop being reprinted with the Marvel Universes Beyond set coming in 2026, which will likely synergize with Doomsday (which will lean heavily on the X-Men cast of heroes and villains), MTG has a huge chance to capitalize on a new wave of hype around Wolverine. The game is all set to give the character a special spotlight and cash in, should a 2026 Marvel’s Wolverine truly be on the cards.
Accepting, for the moment, the chance of Marvel’s Wolverine getting a 2026 release date, this timeline would see the game find itself in good company. Not only will Doomsday relate hugely to the X-Men characters, but MTG is already lined up to score fans some more Wolverine cards—and it’d be worth it for WOTC to lean in even more. The year will bring a great deal of attention to Wolverine if all these dominoes fall into place, who’s already a character with more attention than most. Despite the MCU taking center stage for the past decade, Wolverine has remained one of the most popular superheroes of all time. With how much buzz MTG‘s crossover sets receive, there’s potential for an incredibly lucrative crossover if rumors prove true.
