Southgate tipped as possible successor to Ten HagNeville advises United against hiring England boss Believes the timing is not right for all parties WHAT HAPPENED?

Ten Hag is under pressure to keep his job at Old Trafford and amid their underwhelming results, Three Lions manager Southgate has been linked with replacing him. However, former Red Devils star Neville said Southgate to United "can't happen".

He said on the Stick to Football podcast: 'I've come to the conclusion that [Gareth] Southgate can't happen. There's no way Manchester United can wait until mid-July, when pre-season's already started. They'd look like they don't know what they're doing. And, there's no way Gareth can announce it before a major tournament. He won't do that."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

United appear to be going backwards under manager Ten Hag, despite them reaching the FA Cup final this season. They are eighth in the Premier League, may fail to qualify for Europe and they could end the campaign trophyless. While Neville is an admirer of Southgate, it appears he wants his old club to look elsewhere should the former Ajax boss get dismissed.
